Spirit Airlines, Inc. is one of the most popular airlines of the United States of America with Miramar, Florida being its main hub. The Spirit established itself as a leading North American low-cost airline serving various cities of the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Brief History

In 1964, a company Clippert Trucking Company came into being and, later, it established an airline namely Charter One. Charter One was renamed Spirit Airlines on May 29, 1992.

Afterward, Spirit expanded its network to some new cities like Orlando, and Philadelphia and attracted every type of passenger whether it is business, leisure, or any other.

In the beginning, Spirit's headquarter was located in Michigan, Metro Detroit. The decision to shift the headquarter from Michigan to Miramar, Florida was taken in November 1999.

Cabins

Unlike other airlines, Spirit offers only a singles class of cabins. Booking a ticket inclusive of various add-ons is possible. Passengers enjoy excellent inflight services include drinks, food, comfortable seats, and others. Spirit Airlines offers a chance to select a preferred seat. Seats in the first and second rows of the aircraft are called Big Front. Premium seats are located in the middle and normal seats are called Standard. Therefore, passengers can select seats according to their preferences. Fares are in accordance with the seats selected at the time of booking. If the seats are offered by Spirit, passengers should not pay for that but they will have to incur charges ($1 to $50) for the seats they want to select. For Big Front seats, charges are $12 to $250.

Baggage Policy

Spirit follows route based baggage policy. Fee paid for the baggage is non-refundable. Passengers can board the flight with five checked baggage items on purchase. The standard size for a baggage item is 62 linear inches weighing 40 pounds. Exceeding the limits attracts some extra charges but a piece of baggage exceeding 100 pounds in size and weighing more than 100 pounds is unacceptable.

Charges for an item having size-41 to 50 lbs and weighing 18 to 23 kg are $35.

Charges for an item having size-51 to 70 lbs and weighing 23 to 32 kg are $60.

Charges for an item having size-71 to 100 lbs and weighing 32 to 45 kg are $100.

Passengers will have to pay $150 if a baggage item is more than 80 linear inches.

Passengers can travel with a piece of carry-on baggage along with a personal item for which they may have to pay some fee. Carry-on baggage size should not exceed the limit-56 x 46 x 25 cm. Maximum size of a personal item should be under 45 x 35 x 20 cm

Check-in

Spirit allows the passengers to check-in before 24 hours to 60 minutes from the departure time. Online check-in option is available if one wishes to complete check-in formalities at home. Passengers can complete check-in process on airline’s counter available at the airports and get the boarding pass after paying a fee. 

Frequent-flyer Program

Spirit Airlines provides various benefits under its prestigious program, Free Spirit. Every dollar spent brings Free Spirit points. Points are valid for a year if there is no earning of a point throughout the year. There are three categories of the program-Free Spirit Member, Free Spirit Silver, and Free Spirit Gold.

Silver- A member should earn 2000 points in a year to get Free Spirit Silver status.

Gold- Prescribed limit for a member to get Free Spirit Gold status is 5000 points.
